Single-Leg Balance Hold

What it is

Standing on one foot and holding a steady position for a set amount of time.

Purpose

Trains the ankle and foot's balance and proprioceptive control — the body's ability to sense and adjust joint position without looking.

Starting position

Stand tall, then lift one foot slightly off the floor, keeping the standing knee soft (not locked).

Step by step

  1. Hold the position, keeping the standing foot's arch and toes making small adjustments as needed to stay balanced.
  2. Keep the hips level and the trunk upright.
  3. Hold for the target time, then switch legs.

Breathing

Breathe steadily throughout — do not hold your breath.

Coaching cues

"Soft knee, tall spine, let your foot make small adjustments to stay steady."

Common mistakes

Locking the standing knee; letting the hips tilt to one side; staring at the floor instead of a fixed point ahead (which helps balance).

Easier regression

Hold onto a wall or rail with one or two fingers for light support, or reduce the hold time.

Harder progression

Close the eyes briefly (with support nearby), stand on an unstable surface (like a folded towel), or add a small reaching movement with the arms.

Alternatives

Single-leg balance with a ball toss, tandem (heel-to-toe) stance.

Who may benefit

Nearly everyone, especially those returning to activity after an ankle injury or wanting to reduce fall/sprain risk.

Who should modify or avoid it

Those with significant balance impairment should always have a support nearby and progress very gradually.

Why this exercise works

Removing the second foot forces the ankle's muscles and joint receptors to make constant small corrections, directly training the balance and control that keep the ankle stable on uneven ground or after a change of direction.

⚠ Safety note

Practice near a wall or sturdy support to catch yourself if needed, especially when starting out.
