Weakness here is classically associated with a 'Trendelenburg' pattern — the opposite hip drops during single-leg stance because the weight-bearing side's gluteus medius cannot hold the pelvis level.

- A fan-shaped muscle on the outer surface of the pelvis, mostly hidden beneath the gluteus maximus.
- Origin
- Outer surface of the ilium.
- Insertion
- Greater trochanter of the femur.
- Main action(s)
- Abducts the thigh at the hip; its anterior fibers assist internal rotation and its posterior fibers assist external rotation. Critically, it stabilizes the pelvis (keeps it level) during single-leg stance.

- A visibly weak-looking glute is not always about size — pelvic control during single-leg movement is a functional marker that matters as much as visible muscle bulk.
