This shin muscle lifts your toes and the front of your foot up toward your knee — the muscle you feel working if you try to walk on your heels.

It contracts eccentrically (lengthening under tension) right after heel strike in walking/running to control how quickly the foot lowers to the ground — weakness here is one contributor to a foot-slap gait pattern.

A long muscle running down the outer front edge of the shin bone (tibia).
Origin
Upper lateral surface of the tibia.
Insertion
First metatarsal and medial cuneiform bones of the foot.

Dorsiflexes the ankle (lifts the foot up) and assists inversion (turning the sole of the foot inward).

Commonly confused with
Sometimes assumed to be part of 'the calf,' but it sits on the front of the shin and does the opposite action (dorsiflexion, not plantarflexion).
Common misconceptions
Shin discomfort during new or increased running volume is not automatically 'shin splints' requiring rest forever — but persistent or worsening shin pain does need evaluation.
