Along with its partner fibularis brevis, it is a key dynamic stabilizer against ankle inversion sprains (rolling the ankle inward), which is why balance and eversion-strength work is common after an ankle sprain.

A long muscle running down the outer side of the lower leg, along the fibula.
Origin
Upper lateral surface of the fibula.
Insertion
First metatarsal and medial cuneiform (crossing under the sole of the foot).
