Along with its partner fibularis brevis, it is a key dynamic stabilizer against ankle inversion sprains (rolling the ankle inward), which is why balance and eversion-strength work is common after an ankle sprain.

- A long muscle running down the outer side of the lower leg, along the fibula.

- Upper lateral surface of the fibula.

- First metatarsal and medial cuneiform (crossing under the sole of the foot).
