A row of small muscles hugging the spine that act like fine-tuning cables, keeping each vertebra controlled as you move — different from the long erector spinae, which works over a bigger range.

Because it spans only a few segments at a time, the multifidus provides intersegmental control that longer, more superficial muscles cannot; reduced multifidus control is commonly discussed in low-back-pain research.

- You cannot directly 'feel' or isolate the multifidus the way you can a limb muscle — it is trained through controlled, quality movement, not by targeted flexing.
